For those of you with solid memories, Bernie the fire truck may well trigger some fond thoughts.
The classic 1964 VK Commer Fire Engine was converted in the 1990s as part of the Variety Bash and was part of a fleet that toured the country raising funds, dishing out grants and raising awareness of children's charity Variety each year.
Since retiring from promotional duties Bernie has been living in Te Puke and is now up for sale on Trade Me, as his current owner can no longer take the wheel due to injury.
There is plenty of love for the truck in the community, with actor Shane Cortese helping to produce a children’s tale about Bernie back in 2013. The book was based on Bernie’s real life adventures, visiting places like Cape Reinga and Mission Bay.
Now a New Zealand icon is keen to find a new home and potentially even get put back to work. You never know where Bernie might end up next, but we hope he gets to carry on putting smiles on faces wherever that is.
