Beat Kitchen’s story is a cracking little yarn about finding your people and saying yes to the crazy.
Chefs Craig and Kei met while working together at C1 Espresso in Christchurch. When Craig left to move to Wellington, they kept in touch and talked about setting up their own gig one day.
That day came when Craig came across a former Japanese library bus on Trade Me Motors at 2am one morning. He rang Kei with an idea, she reckoned it was crazy – so she was in.
Craig and Kei spent the best part of a year kitting out the bus with a full commercial kitchen, including a bunch of second-hand goods from Trade Me to start out with.
“Most of that was designing it two or three times, screwing it up, and starting again,” says Craig.
Beat Kitchen can now be found at their permanent site (courtesy of Trade Me Property) behind Recycle Boutique on Dunlop Terrace, Wellington. The menu changes daily and the donuts are nothing short of delicious.
