If you’ve ever dreamed of hand-feeding and bathing a 3-tonne elephant, then dream no more. Auckland Zoo is offering the opportunity of a lifetime for a couple of animal lovers to spend some face-to-face time with Burma, their Asian elephant.
Burma landed in NZ in 1990 as a young-un and has been resident here ever since. She is now 37 - the senior stateswoman of the zoo’s two elephants. The winner of the auction will get to bring a friend along and spend some time with the keepers learning about Burma and her species, give her a feed and then help with the daily bath.
The money raised from this auction will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund, which is helping to ensure the protection and preservation of the Asian elephant by supporting programmes in Sri Lanka and Sumatra.
Bidding has only just crossed the $1000 mark with the auction not due to close till Thursday 5 December. If you’re looking to get someone an awesome experience for Christmas then it will be hard to go past this one.
