National leader Bill English and Labour leader Jacinda Ardern popped up on Trade Me last week ahead of the general election. An oil painting of Jacinda and a watercolour of Bill went up for auction and they caused quite the stir.
‘Jacinda Ardern Scream’ was a true “labour of love” according to Hazel Hunt, the artist and seller. Based off the famous Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ painting, the 1.2 meter portrait has heralded over 14,000 views and 33 comments since it was listed last Thursday.
Sarah Usher from Auckland also jumped onboard the political painting bandwagon when she listed a watercolour portrait of Bill English. Unfortunately, Bill didn’t quite like the painting. “Bill said he didn’t want to buy my painting as he thinks it doesn’t look like him but you can buy it and hang it in your lounge,” she said. The watercolour received plenty of attention since it was first listed, fetching over 10,000 views and over 40 cheeky comments.
Here at Trade Me, we thought they were both pretty amazing pieces of art so we decided to add them to our Cool Auctions rotation on Trade Me’s homepage.
The pair of paintings made news headlines and there was even a complaint to the Electoral Commission about the artwork.
