Project Santa trial begins on Trade Me
Trade Me is shaking up online shopping in New Zealand with a new $9, two-month, unlimited free shipping offer across more than a million items.
Trade Me Head of Marketplace Stuart McLean said selected Trade Me members have been invited to pay $9 for unlimited free shipping on 1.3 million new products. “We’ve been looking at shipping options for a while now and this is our next step to find out what Kiwis think of a subscription product like this. We think it will appeal to our buyers but we don’t know until we give it a try.
“We know shipping costs are a pain point for buyers, and they get frustrated when shipping costs push the price of their items up. We want to see if removing that pain point changes buyer behaviour and if it’s something we should look at long term.”
Mr McLean said the promotion is available from 24 October until 24 December and had been dubbed ‘Project Santa’. “It’s the perfect opportunity to test out an unlimited shipping service for less than 10 bucks.
“The run-up to Christmas is our busiest time of year, Kiwis from all over the country are hunting out the perfect present. It will be a great time to see how free shipping might help them.
“More than 350,000 members received an email or app notification late yesterday inviting them to take up the trial, on a first in, first served basis. For now we’re limiting the subscription service to 5,500 members but we may increase that depending on demand. At this stage it is only a trial and won’t be available to all members.
Mr McLean said that members with the unlimited shipping option, have no restrictions on location or delivery address within New Zealand. “We think it’s important to provide a nationwide service, including both the North and South Island, and rural and urban addresses.”
Sellers will not be asked to take on any additional costs for this trial. “This is a fact finding mission for us. When the promotion ends on Christmas Eve, we’ll gather up the data and the feedback from our members. We know this will provide us with great insights on what works and what doesn’t for our members.”
