We recently hosted 10 aspiring tech workers at Trade Me as part of the ShadowTech day.
ShadowTech is an opportunity for secondary school girls to find out about working in IT. It’s run by the New Zealand Technology Industry Association and hosted by WelTec.
The day saw girls from schools around Wellington paired with 15 female mentors at Trade Me to spend the morning learning about a huge range of roles that make Trade Me tick. From database infrastructure, to coding and designing systems and seeing how account managers and marketers use IT.
Ginny Ryder our Payments Sales Manager organised the day and said ShadowTech was a great opportunity to show young girls how awesome a role in technology could be. “The tech industry has some long held gender stereotypes that we’ve wanted to bust. “We’ve been working hard on promoting diversity at Trade Me and ensuring that we get a diverse range of candidates for roles we advertise,” she says.
“It was great to be able to take some time out and encourage these girls into an industry we’re passionate about.”
“Hopefully the girls got a lot out of the day and we see them applying for some roles at Trade Me in a few years!”
Also a big thank you to our mentors Cathy, Julia, Jenna, Lucy, Anna, Denny, Fran, Tina, Fiona, Amelia, Sandra, Roxy, Moana, Rachel and Louise.
