The one of a kind van turned ute, aka Vanute, is back on the block. ZMs afternoon show crew Bree and Clint took ownership of this Kiwi icon after it captured the nation’s attention back in January. The pair then took the Vanute on a tour of the North Island, cruising through regional New Zealand to give the people a chance to see the champion of mulleted vehicles for themselves.
Vanute’s origins are traced back to Dunedin, when it began life as the popular tradie’s Toyota Hi Ace before being modified by the team at Custom Performance and Restoration. It then ended up in the hands of mechanic Jeff Stanton, the owner of Precision Auto Centre, and had a star turn in the Marlborough's Christmas Parade carrying the Blenheim Roller Skating Club. It has a siren and a PA system that Stanton put in himself.
For the record, the 2WD 2.4L petrol Vanute has now clocked up 470,000kms. It has no power-steering, no air con and no WOF or rego. With a few hundred members keeping an eye on this one, it’s no doubt going to have a new owner come Thursday 12 December.
